Plumbing Dos and Don’ts of Safety
When you’re trying to do some work around the house, there are a few plumbing dos and don’ts of safety S.O.S Plumbing would like to make you aware of. Below are a few suggestions for what you should and should not be doing when it comes to plumbing. We’ll be focusing on the safety perspective.
Plumbing Safety Dos
The first rule is to always think about the next step before you take the first one. Before you open a drain, you need to ask yourself will the water be headed in your direction? A clog can put significant pressure into the system, and you don’t need sewage flying your way. Shut off the water first. If you’re using anything touching the water supply, shut it off.
Know your local building and plumbing codes. This helps you to know what you can and can’t do. Protect your eyes, hands, and lungs. Safety glasses, work gloves, and face masks are vital safety gear when you’re doing any home improvement project.
Tool safety is another big one. Use the right tool and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Finally, read all the labels on products you’re using. You’d be surprised how many common cleaners when mixed together create poisonous fumes.
Plumbing Safety Don’ts
This is sort of covered above, but code requirements. Don’t ignore them. They’re in existence to protect you. Don’t ignore the smell of gas. If you think you smell natural gas, stop whatever you’re doing, turn off the gas, and contact a gas company. Don’t cut into anything blindly. Always know what’s on the other side of whatever wall or ceiling you’re cutting into. Don’t misuse your tools or equipment. They’re designed for certain uses and those uses only.
