There are some rather common items that go into garbage disposals that really have no place in them. Another issue is pasta. Now, a few pieces here and there won’t be too much, but large quantities can block a pipe as they keep expanding in water. And your disposal isn’t designed for hard items, so try your best to avoid putting bones in there.

Aw, nuts! Grinding up nuts turns them into a thick paste. We can assure you, thick pasty substances don’t mix well with pipes. Things with thin membranes like eggs and the outer skin of onions can also cause issues if they lodge and start acting like a net inside your drain.
Now, this should go without saying, but it does sometimes happen; never put trash in your garbage disposal. Paper towels, bags, wrappers, and the like have no business in your disposal.
